Extractions & Bone Grafting in Sarasota, FL
When possible, it’s usually preferable to restore and save a damaged tooth. In some cases, however, the best option may be to remove the tooth – especially when the tooth is putting your other dentistry at risk.
If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted, it’s important to work with a dentist you can trust. Sarasota dentist Dr. Kaya Aygen has performed plenty of extractions and knows how to make your procedure more efficient and more comfortable.
Additionally, at Sarasota Dental Arts, we are skilled in advanced techniques that allow us to prepare the extraction site for future tooth replacement. Replacing the tooth isn’t just good for your self-confidence; it’s also important for your overall dental health. When a tooth isn’t replaced, your teeth may shift, and you are likely to experience bone loss, which can eventually lead to further tooth loss.
Bone Grafting & Ridge Preservation
When a tooth is lost or extracted, bone loss in the area is common and it can happen quickly. This can make replacing the tooth with an implant more challenging since sufficient bone is necessary to securely hold the implant in place.
By using donor bone, we can either build up the bone to restore what has already been lost or prevent the bone from being lost in the first place. This procedure is safe and effective and can be done during your extraction.
Dr. Aygen will discuss your options with you before removing the tooth so that you can make an informed decision about your dental health.
Simple & Surgical Extractions
Extractions come in two main categories – simple and surgical. Simple extractions are done when the tooth is present above the gum line and is intact enough to be removed whole. Once you are numb and comfortable, Dr. Aygen will use special tools to gently rock the tooth back and forth and then lift it up. People are often surprised by how quickly the procedure is complete!
A surgical extraction is done when the tooth isn’t intact or when it has broken off beneath the gumline. This type of extraction requires an incision in the gumline to access the tooth and may require sutures afterward. Again, Dr. Aygen will make sure that you are numb and comfortable before beginning the procedure.
We recognize that extractions can seem intimidating, and we have sedation options to help you stay calm and relaxed throughout the procedure. If you’d like to learn more about these options, just give us a call so that we can discuss them with you.
Make sure to follow Dr. Aygen’s instructions for self-care after your extraction. Avoid smoking or sipping drinks through a straw since these actions can dislodge the clot that is forming. This clot is necessary for proper healing. Without it, you may experience uncomfortable complications. Take any prescribed medications exactly as directed, and if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to give us a call!
