You've received the dreaded news that your tooth is infected and it can't be saved, and now you need a tooth extraction. The good news is that Dr. Kaya Aygen at Sarasota Dental Arts has extensive experience with all types of extractions including both simple and surgical procedures. Here's what you can expect from a tooth extraction.

A Simple Extraction

These are teeth that are intact above the gum line and can be removed whole. You will be numb so you don't feel anything during the procedure, and sometimes a local anesthetic is all that's needed for a simple extraction. Most patients are surprised at how straightforward this type of procedure is.

A Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction is needed for teeth that are severely fractured, broken, or impacted (stuck beneath the gum line). This type of extraction will utilize a local anesthetic and some patients also prefer dental sedation.

Dr. Aygen offers options for dental sedation including IV sedation, which can help you feel deeply relaxed and even as though you are sleeping throughout your extraction procedure. You can discuss these options with Dr. Aygen beforehand if you feel you would need them for your extraction.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

Dr. Aygen will provide instructions for the recovery process after your extraction. Avoid smoking or sipping drinks through a straw for the first few days after your extraction because it might dislodge the clot that is forming and needed for healing. You can take any medications prescribed for pain exactly as directed and as needed. You can always feel free to give Sarasota Dental Arts a call during your recovery if you have questions or concerns about the process.
