Bad breath, or halitosis, is one of those topics we like to avoid. It's embarrassing telling someone they have it, and it's even worse if you're the culprit.

Your Sarasota dentist has some tips on managing bad breath, so you can avoid these awkward situations.

Clean Your Tongue

There are actually a lot of bacteria that hide on the surface of your tongue. If you're not regularly brushing or scraping your tongue to clean out the bacteria, you might experience an unpleasant odor in your mouth. Don't forget to brush your tongue!

Drink Water

Certain beverages, such as coffee, tea, and alcohol, can actually contribute to bad breath. These beverages tend to dry out your mouth. Drinking more water helps keep your mouth moist and also washes out the food particles and debris that could be contributing to the odor in your mouth.

Visit Your Dentist

When you struggle with bad breath that doesn't seem to go away no matter what you try, this could be an indicator of deeper problems going on. Chronic halitosis is a sign of gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease. Visiting Dr. Aygen for a checkup is a good idea because gingivitis can often be eliminated with a thorough professional cleaning and an improved home care routine. Early intervention with gum disease gives you a better chance of treating your condition with less invasive procedures.
