With all the different kinds of toothpaste available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which kind to buy! The choice is mostly up to you, but we do recommend that you use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is added to toothpaste to strengthen your enamel and help you fight cavities.
Some toothpastes serve a specific need. For instance, if you have sensitive teeth, a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, like Sensodyne, can help make brushing more comfortable. Toothpaste is also available to help people with dry mouth.\
What about whitening toothpastes?
You should know that some of the claims made by different brands of toothpaste can be somewhat misleading. For instance, many kinds of toothpaste claim that they whiten teeth. “Whitening” toothpaste may include small amounts of a bleaching ingredient (like peroxide) or rely on abrasives to polish away surface stains. Here’s the catch, though – any bleaching ingredient is going to be of a fairly low strength, and it isn’t going to stay in contact with your teeth long enough to show an effect. Likewise, abrasives can damage restorative dentistry like crowns, bridges, and veneers by causing tiny scratches in the surface that can trap plaque and bacteria.
Truthfully, simply keeping a regular routine and brushing your teeth twice a day using good technique will help keep surface staining to a minimum! If you do decide you’d like to whiten your teeth, give us a call and we can schedule an appointment for you to discuss your goals with Sarasota dentist Dr. Kaya Aygen!
