Frequently Asked Questions

Antibiotics at Dental Appointments Sarasota FLCertain medical conditions do make premedication with antibiotics a smart choice. At Sarasota Dental Arts, we make your safety a priority. If you have had a joint replacement or have advanced cardiac or immune issues, we will take the necessary precautions for your safety, including premedication with antibiotics.

When are antibiotics typically recommended?

Antibiotics with dental treatment used to be more common, but new guidelines still recommend antibiotics if you have:

  • Artificial heart valves
  • A history of infective endocarditis
  • Certain congenital heart conditions
  • A cardiac transplant with a problem in the heart valve

Dr. Aygen is happy to consult with your medical doctor to make sure that you are getting the best possible care. Your doctor is also welcome to speak with us. We’ll just ask you to fill out a release of information, which gives us permission to speak with your other providers about your care.

If you have questions or concerns, please call our office. Dr. Aygen is happy to meet with you ahead of your procedure and explain the reasons why antibiotic prophylaxis is an important safety precaution. Antibiotic overuse and resistance is also a serious issue, and if you’ve used antibiotics in the past, you might wonder why they are no longer recommended. Dr. Aygen is happy to discuss this with you as well.

Dentist Appointments | Sarasota Fl DentistRoutine Dental Visit

Generally speaking, we recommend that everyone see the dentist every six months for a cleaning and examination. This can, of course, vary depending on your specific needs. For instance, if we are treating you for periodontal disease or another condition, we may recommend that you come see us more often.

Visiting the dentist for those regularly scheduled appointments is the best way to prevent serious dental health issues from forming. It also allows your dentist to catch any small concerns before they become more costly to address.

Follow-Up Visits

Additionally, if we are placing a restoration or have performed a treatment like a root canal, we may recommend that you return for a follow-up so that we can make sure that everything is looking good. If you’ve been seen for emergency care, we will recommend a follow-up visit so that we can create a maintenance plan to help you avoid future emergencies.

Appointments for Snowbirds

Many of our patients are “snowbirds,” spending the winter months in beautiful Sarasota and the summer up north. We don’t want you to miss out on your important twice-yearly preventive examinations, so snowbirds and other travelers are always welcome at our office! We will happily coordinate care with your dental provider up north to make sure that your treatment is consistent and that everyone is on the same page.

If you are new to the area or you are seeking a new practice, please contact us! We are always welcoming new patients, and we look forward to meeting you!

Cancel Appointment Sarasota FL We understand that sometimes life can get in the way and you need to reschedule an appointment. If you need to reschedule or cancel, we do ask that you please give us 48 hours notice.

By giving us extra notice, we can offer that appointment time to someone else – perhaps someone who needs an emergency appointment! Without notice, we are unable to use the appointment slot. Giving us extra notice helps us provide more efficient, timely care to all of our patients, including you!

Best Toothpaste to Use | Sarasota FL Dentist With all the different kinds of toothpaste available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which kind to buy! The choice is mostly up to you, but we do recommend that you use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is added to toothpaste to strengthen your enamel and help you fight cavities.

Some toothpastes serve a specific need. For instance, if you have sensitive teeth, a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, like Sensodyne, can help make brushing more comfortable. Toothpaste is also available to help people with dry mouth.\

What about whitening toothpastes?

You should know that some of the claims made by different brands of toothpaste can be somewhat misleading. For instance, many kinds of toothpaste claim that they whiten teeth. “Whitening” toothpaste may include small amounts of a bleaching ingredient (like peroxide) or rely on abrasives to polish away surface stains. Here’s the catch, though – any bleaching ingredient is going to be of a fairly low strength, and it isn’t going to stay in contact with your teeth long enough to show an effect. Likewise, abrasives can damage restorative dentistry like crowns, bridges, and veneers by causing tiny scratches in the surface that can trap plaque and bacteria.

Truthfully, simply keeping a regular routine and brushing your teeth twice a day using good technique will help keep surface staining to a minimum! If you do decide you’d like to whiten your teeth, give us a call and we can schedule an appointment for you to discuss your goals with Sarasota dentist Dr. Kaya Aygen!
